email us here for more information.
Q.
My son / daughter wants to audition for the school jazz
band. Can you help him / her with the
audition?
A. Yes. We ask that you give us a few months to help
prepare your child. These positions are highly competitive
because only "one" position is usually available for
guitar, bass, and drums. (Unlike saxophone or trumpet where
multiple positions need to be filled)
In addition, we recommend that you ask the
school band director for a sample of 2 audition pieces
similar to the ones he or she will be using to assess the
musical skill required for placement. In addition, an
up-to-date rubric used to determine acceptance would be
helpful to prepare efficiently. This information will
provide Community Music with the select band leader's focus
for student admission.
Unlike other disciplines, there is no official state
standard for jazz band acceptance. Every school jazz band
seems to have a different "idea" of what area of
musicianship to focus on. Community Music believes that the
best way to address this process is through planning and an
open line of communication with the "school"
music personnel.
We ask that you provide us with this material at least 12
weeks prior to any audition.
